Choosing the Best GPS Dog Tracker for Poor Coverage
In rural or off-grid areas, dogs and humans enjoy the scenery and good cheer that nature brings. But the freedom that comes with the natural world also brings unique challenges - how do you keep your dog safe in places where cellular signals are virtually non-existent?
Dog GPS tracking devices bring peace of mind, but traditional GPS dog trackers often rely on cellular networks to transmit your dog's location. These devices fail in places where cellular signals are weak or non-existent, leaving your dog's safety a considerable challenge.
Why Traditional GPS Dog Trackers Reply on Cellular Signal Fail in Remote Areas
Most popular GPS dog collars like Fi or Tractive rely on cellular networks. In remote forests, farmland, mountains, or rural areas, this connection can break down - resulting in the following:
❌ Delayed or lost location updates
❌ Inability to track your dog in real-time
❌ Frustration and powerlessness when your dog runs off
That's where the Off-Grid GPS Dog Tracker comes in - track your dog anywhere without a cellular signal.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can GPS dog trackers work without cell phone service?
A: Yes, such as the Aorkuler and Garmin GPS Dog Tracker without a cell phone signal; connecting to GPS satellites for location information and transmitting the data over a separate radio can work in places without a stable cell phone signal.
Q: What is the tracking range of the Aorkuler Dog Tracker? How does the signal perform in different environments?
A: The Aorkuler Dog Tracker uses radio communication for data transmission, and as with all radio-based devices, the signal range can be affected by obstacles. Tracking performance is generally best when there are no obstacles between the two devices and a height difference (e.g., one device is positioned higher). This is analogous to how a car's fuel consumption varies depending on road conditions.
The tracking range of the Aorkuler Dog Tracker in different environments is as follows:
- Dense forests or bushes: Usually up to several hundred meters.
- Thinly wooded or low bush areas: Up to 1 kilometer (0.65 miles).
- Open terrain (no shade, height difference between devices): Maximum tracking distance up to 5.6 km (3.5 miles).
If you use your Aorkuler in complex terrain, we recommend placing the controller higher to minimize obstacles and provide better signal coverage. Additionally, to ensure a better tracking experience, Aorkuler has designed a disconnect-connect mechanism. When the signal is lost, the controller screen will mark the coordinates of the last received tracker with a red icon, prompting the user to go to that location.
Q: Is the Aorkuler Dog Tracker suitable for my dog? How do I install it?
A: The Aorkuler Dog Tracker is suitable for dogs weighing over 5 kg (11 lbs) and is designed to be lightweight so that it won't interfere with your dog's daily activities.
• Tracker dimensions: 44mm × 44mm × 19mm (1.73 inches × 1.73 inches × 0.75 inches)
• Tracker weight: 30g (1.06 oz)
Installation method: The Aorkuler tracker is compatible with dog collars of all sizes. It can be installed using the included holder and strap: • Place the tracker into the holder, ensuring it fits securely. • Attach one end of the strap to the holder, then loop it around the dog's collar. • Secure the other end of the strap to the holder, ensuring a firm installation. After installation, the tracker should be positioned on the dog's collar to maintain a strong GPS signal.

Attention Campers/Overlanders/Nature Lovers and Explorers with canine companions, this Aorkuler Tracker is the best buy you can make to keep your dog safe and give you peace of mind while exploring off grid! The new Tracker 2 is a game changer for anyone with a dog who likes to go off grid but doesn’t want to break the bank. It is incredibly easy to use, for instance, if you are camping off grid and at night in the dark your dog has ventured roughly a km away, the tracker will point you in the direction of your dog, giving you the distance away from your dog and once you in close range the controller will read nearby, at that point the tracker has multiple ways of locating your dog once within ear/eyeshot with lights and sounds equipped on the tracker so in the dark you can find them easily, for scared dogs (or cats) who are hiding in bush etc it can be a lifesaver. The information is communicated in real time, no lag at all, this is hugely beneficial (and a very important valuable feature) as it allows you to keep up on your dog’s movements while they are on the move, as even a small lag in time can mean you are constantly playing catch up on your dogs location which is what many other trackers and tags do, they only “check in” every few minutes, which is unhelpful when your missing dog is on the move, and they are always on the move! Please, take my advice, don’t waste your money on other systems, this one is all you need, it works literally everywhere a GPS does, is in real time, affordable and the customer service is out of this world! I have had many interactions with the designers and owners asking them questions and they have been absolutely stellar to deal with! I am just a regular dog owner, have no affiliation to Aorkuler at all but I love their product so much I want everyone to get one and keep exploring the Great Outdoors with their Canine Companion safely with peace of mind. 10 out of 10 can’t recommend highly enough!
Our furry family member is a very active and energetic Gordon Setter who loves to run. We live in a rural area of Western Canada with cellular service that is inconsistent. We tried the Tractive system and found it wanting; we were frustrated by the number of times we received the “cellular signal too weak” message. If you live in a rural area with limited cell service, or if you take your dog into remote areas with no cell service at all, the Aorkuler tracker may be the answer for you.
The system consists of a small transmitter that attaches to your dog’s collar or harness and a controller you hold in your hand. Once the two are “linked” (this usually only takes a few seconds) the controller tells you the distance and direction your dog is away from you. I have had my dog disappear from eyesight over hills or into trees but the controller unit tells me exactly how far away he is and which direction he is from me. When the numbers start decreasing, I know he’s on his way back long before I spot him again. It’s always gratifying when I call him and almost immediately the numbers go down!
There are a couple of things you should know when considering this tracker. There are no subscription fees and you don’t need a cellular connection. You don’t need an app on your phone, the hand held controller gives you the distance and direction. Unfortunately you can only track one dog with this system, and there’s only one controller for each transmitter, so only one family member can track the dog. Both the tracker and the controller are charged using unique magnetic charging cords and the battery life is quite good, up to several hours on a single charge. And unlike some controllers, the battery still works in very cold (-30C and colder) temperatures.
If you’re looking for a unit that works where there’s no cell signal, requires no subscription fees, and gives accurate real-time distance and direction information for your dog’s location, you should seriously consider getting the Aorkuler tracker.
The Aorkuler tracker is perfect for my little escape artist! It locks onto my dog’s location quickly and updates in real time. I especially love how easy it is to use—setup only takes a few seconds to link everything. Plus, the controller’s battery life is impressive and holds up well even with long hours of use. The best part is, it works flawlessly even in areas without any cell signal. That’s amazing! If you live in a remote area or often take your dog on outdoor adventures, I highly recommend it.
