The Day My Farm Dog Didn't Come Home
Article Index: Not long ago, we received an email from a farm dog owner in Utah, USA, who recounted the frightening experience of losing his beloved dog, Hank (an Australian Shepherd mix). This story touched us deeply and made us realize that the question of how a country dog's freedom and safety can be balanced in a vast rural area is one that every farm dog owner faces.
We invited him to share this personal experience with all of you who also live in the countryside and love the freedom of farm dogs to run free.
A wake-up call from a Utah farm dog owner: Freedom and safety shouldn't be pitted against each other
I live just outside of Cedar City, Utah. It's a 1,500-acre, wide-open farm with distant red rocks, sagebrush, and piney slopes that's my idea of a free world. Here, farm dogs always run free.
My farm dog Hank, an Australian Shepherd mix, rushes out of the house every morning like he's chasing the sunrise. He patrols the pastures, chases rabbits, and rolls in the streams. When it was time to eat, he would always return on time.
Until one day, he didn't return.
There comes a time when the phrase “he keeps coming back” doesn't work!
That morning, as usual, Hank chased the sheep and chickens around the farm and soon he disappeared from my sight. At first, I didn't care. But by noon, I began to feel uneasy.
By 3 pm, he hadn't returned, so my wife and I decided to drive around the farm looking for him, and by 4 pm, we had driven around the neighborhood for miles.
When the sun went down, there was still no sign of Hank.
I stayed up almost all night that night with barbed wire, coyotes, and cliffs on my mind. I began to wonder if there was a bottom line to the so-called “freedom”.
Fortunately, the next day at noon, Hank came limping back, covered in mud and bruises, almost collapsing from exhaustion.
I realized at that moment that I needed to protect his freedom, and I needed to be able to find him when he was out of my sight.
Why are most GPS dog trackers not for rural Utah?
I started looking for a dog GPS tracker online, which I thought would be easy.
At first, I purchased the Tractive dog GPS tracker on Amazon which has good sales and ratings, in addition to the tracking function, it also has an app and a virtual fence that monitors the dog's activity, after I received it, I couldn't wait to try it out, but soon, I found out the obvious, in the area where I live, this product can't be almost unusable, because I don't have a stable cellular signal in my area, I was often unable to locate Hank on the app, so I returned this product and purchased another dog GPS tracker on Amazon. But like the first one, both dog GPS trackers had significant problems in our type of environment:
- Cell signal was required - but we had no cell signal whenever we were out on the mountain.
- Rely on the phone app - but my phone often runs out of battery or internet.
-
Requires a monthly subscription fee - billed separately from the device cost.
I need the kind of dog GPS tracking device that works for rural areas.
Then I started searching for such products on Google and finally found the Aorkuler dog GPS tracker without cell signal for farm dogs.
The Aorkuler is a GPS dog tracker for the truly rural environment in areas with no cellular signal.
It relies on radio signals (not Wi-Fi or cellular), comes with a dedicated handheld controller, and doesn't require a cell phone, app, or any monthly subscription fees.
It's like it was made for places like us: Cedar City, Moab, the outskirts of Bryce Canyon.
What is the difference between the Aorkuler dog GPS tracker and the two dog trackers I have previously purchased?
The main reason I chose the Aorkuler dog GPS tracker is that it doesn't require a cellular signal, so it works in my area, and it doesn't require a monthly subscription fee, although it was expensive to purchase in the beginning, it is far less expensive than the two previous dog GPS trackers that I purchased if I use it for a long period.
I now attach the Aorkuler dog GPS tracker to Hank's collar every time he leaves the house. I don't have to worry anymore. What if he doesn't come back after the expected time? Pick up the controller, and immediately know Hank's location, it is worth mentioning, that the Aorkuler GPS dog tracker through the direction and distance to indicate the location of Hank, which is particularly friendly to the 68-year-old me, which makes it particularly easy for me to find hank, just follow the direction of the instructions to go, no need to discern the direction and location of their own, follow the arrows to go, you can quickly find Hank, I have to say! Aorkuler dog GPS tracker is a Game-changer.
For other farm dog owners living in rural areas, I highly recommend this product.
Testimonials from ranch dog owners in other state
“We're near Breathitt, Montana, and the cellular signal is basically all but non-existent. I have tried several dog GPS trackers on the market and they all failed in the area I live in. Only the Aorkuler dog GPS tracker was able to track my collie Duke consistently in these environments. Solved a big problem.”
-- Kelly M., Silver Bow County, Montana
“My dog Ranger always likes to head deeper into that eastern Oklahoma brush. I used to have to worry every time I went out if he would get lost. With the Aorkuler dog GPS tracker 2, I can tell exactly where he is going and how far away he is from 2 miles away, so I feel much more secure.”
-- James H., Leflore County, Oklahoma
“I live in the Appalachian Mountains of Georgia with almost zero cellular signal. Both of my dogs are free-range ranch dogs, and I used to have to rely on providence to find them. Aorkuler dog tracker not only has no monthly fee, but also tracks accurately through the woods and ravines, and has already been recommended to neighbors.”
-- Rebecca T., Gilmer County, Georgia
“We have cattle dogs in Texas and they run on hundreds of acres every day. We lost them once before and it took two days to find them. Since then I've used Aorkuler dog tracker 2 and haven't lost a dog in over 6 months now.”

Hi William,
Thank you so much for your interest in the Aorkuler Dog GPS Tracker, and for sharing your experience with Nich — we know how stressful it can be when a beloved dog goes missing, especially in rural areas where wildlife and wide-open spaces are part of daily life.
To answer your question: Yes, our tracker works without any cellular signal. In fact, it’s specifically designed for areas with poor or no cell coverage, like many parts of rural Tennessee. That’s why it doesn’t rely on apps, Wi-Fi, or a mobile network — instead, it uses a direct radio connection between the handheld controller and the tracker on your dog’s collar.
As with all radio-based systems, obstacles such as dense woods, hills, or buildings can impact the range, but in open areas, Aorkuler can reliably track up to 3.5 miles, and some of our U.S. customers have even reported successfully tracking their dogs over 4 miles away.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. We’d love to help Nich enjoy his freedom — safely.
Best regards,
Aorkuler Service Team
I live in a rural area of TN, and my Labrador, Nich, loves to run around the surrounding land. He often disappears without a trace while chasing wildlife. Most of the time, he comes back on his own, but there have been times when he got lost and I had to search for him with my wife — we even had to pick him up from a nearby animal shelter once.
I previously purchased the Fi dog GPS tracker, but just like the article mentioned, it was basically useless in our area due to the poor cellular signal, so I ended up returning it.
I’d like to confirm again — does your product work without any cellular signal? And what is the tracking range like?
